2nd Annual Landscape Recognition Program

Nancy Brinkley's winning landscape includes both her front and back yards, which are extremely low water using. Nancy removed all of her grass in 2005 and replaced it with an array of succulents and other California Friendly® plants. The variation of plants and their bloom create a colorful haven in the spring and fall. Even the succulents provide vibrant colored flowers that are hard to miss. Her yard includes pathways and borders created with different colored rocks like lava rock and pea gravel. These features are not only beautiful but they help keep the soil most after watering.

Nancy's landscape is watered through a highly efficient irrigation method. With the installation of her plants came her underground drip system, which disperses water directly to the plants' roots. During the winter, her irrigation is turned off completely. Both her plant selection and irrigation method make Nancy's landscape an excellent example of a beautiful, low water using landscape.Brinkley1

Brinkley3Nancy's Plant List: Golden barrel cactus, Pipe organ cactus, Silver torch cactus, Old man cactus, Echinopsis, Tephrocactus, Red tip yucca, Euphorbia canariensis, Sedum (pork and beans), Red spikes, Fairy washboard, Agave, Aloe vera, Bulbini, Euphorbia lamic, Senecio Festuca, Sea lavenders, Yarrow, Salvia, Sage, Heavenly bamboo, Santa Barbara daisies, and Society garlic

James and Mindy Jorgensen have several water efficient elements in their landscape, especially their irrigation which includes rotator nozzles and a weather sensitive Weathermatic Irrigation Controller. They have drip irrigation in their planter beds, and mulch around their plants, which reduces evaporation and keeps the soil moist longer. The Jorgensen's front and back yards together are a good example of a water efficient landscape that contains lawn. When compared to the overall square footage, the amount of lawn is very minimal and the way it is watered is extremely Jorgensen3efficient. The MP rotator nozzles used to water the lawn are devices that have accurate spray control, reducing the amount of water lost in the air by up to 20%. In the backyard, there are many California Friendly® plants surrounded by attractive pathways, rocks and ornamental frog sculptures. The combination of multicolored plants, low water using trees, and contrasting hardscapes make their backyard a beautiful place to enjoy, and it saves water. Jorgensen1

James & Mindy's Plant List: Palms, Crepe Myrtle, Sagos, Pepper, French lavender, Agapanthus, Bougainvillea, Flax, Spanish sage, Cannas, Rosemary, Sea lavender, Dwarf Indian hawthorn, and Boxwood

Purdy1Lynn & Susan Purdy's front yard is very distinct from your typical lawn and driveway landscape. Their large front yard consists of no lawn, but instead has many interesting and beautiful plants that thrive in our Southern California climate. There are several trees dispersed on the property, all of which are drought tolerant, Purdy2like Crape Myrtle and Australia native Paperbark trees. The landscape also consists of a variety of blossoming shrubs, ground cover, and long growing grasses. While this yard has no lawn, it is still full of many shades of green. The lush plants and trees only require irrigation three times a week! The Purdy's 4,000 square foot front yard is attractive and colorful, yet requires very little water like a desert, making their design a great variation of a water efficient landscape.

Lynn & Susan's Plant List:  Lavetera, Crape Myrtle, Kangaroo paw, Lantana, Lavender, Salvia, Red loropetalum, Golden agapanthus, Weeping Acacia, Eaton canyon, Heavenly bamboo, Newport dwarf, Rhaphiolepis, Barometer bush, Tree Mallow, Paperbark tree, Goodwin creek gray lavender
