It's Nice to Use it Twice

Succulent Garden


Water Cycle (first through third grades): Students learn the components and processes of the water cycle while constructing the cycle. Students assemble a bracelet using beads that represent each part of the water cycle.

States of Water (first through third grades): Students learn to distinguish the three states of water - solid, liquid, and gas - while playing a card match game.

Enviroscape (first through sixth grades): A three dimensional landscape model shows a typical community with urban, agricultural, and industrial water uses. Students learn about water pollution using Kool-Aid, pudding, cocoa powder, and spray bottles to simulate rain.

Tap Water Challenge (fourth through sixth grades): Students perform tests on water to determine their pH, iron, hardness, copper, and chlorine levels.

Owl Pellet Investigation (fourth through sixth grades): Students dissect owl pellets to find out what owls have consumed, and reconstruct the bone structure of the creatures they find. This activity teaches students about the food chain, and how all living things need water to survive.

Water-Borne Lab (fourth through sixth grades): Students view slides of microorganisms that occur in water and learn about water-borne diseases.

Vermicomposting (first through sixth grades): Students learn how worms help the environment by decomposing organic material. Students make their own mini-composting bin from a two liter bottle using recycled newspaper and worms.

Growing Native (first through fifth grades): Students learn about the benefits of native plants in our environment. Students have the opportunity to plant a seed and learn how to care for it.

It’s Nice to Use It Twice (first through sixth grades): Students will increase their understanding of preserving natural resources through waste reduction, materials reuse, and recycling. Students identify various materials found at home that are reusable or recyclable and the steps in the recycling process.

Succulent Garden (first through sixth grades): Students will learn about different native plants and recognize that changes to conditions in the environment may affect growth and development of plants. 

Rainstick (first through sixth grades): Students will build a rainstick out of materials from their own environment, and like people of ancient cultures, imitate the sound of rain.
