Earth Day & Open House

2014 Event Attracts 1,300 Community Members

On Saturday, April 5th, 1,300 community members attended the Inland Empire’s largest Earth Day & Open House at the Frontier Project in Rancho Cucamonga. The event, hosted by CVWD and the Frontier Project Foundation, offered attendees a wide span of resources and engaging activities, including 80 vendors and booths, from solar panel companies to community groups to kids’ activities. Event highlights included landscape workshops, performances by famed Environmental Magician Paul Cash, document shredding, and master of ceremonies Joel Greene- creator producer, and host of PBS’s “Curiosity Quest”.

“I come here every year,” commented attendee David Crickon. “I’ve learned so much; like take shorter showers and install energy saving light bulbs.”

The Earth Day & Open House provided a fun, educational environment for the entire family. One component of the event was the CVWD Open House where attendees observed first-hand the cutting-edge work conducted by CVWD staff. At CVWD’s Water Maintenance Division demonstration, for example, attendees learned how to detect leaks at their homes and how to shut off their water valve in case of a leak or emergency. Additional CVWD Division displays included Field Service, Customer Service, Finance, Sewer Maintenance, Production, Human Resources and Safety, Recycled Water and Backflow.

“CVWD thanks everyone who joined us to celebrate Earth Day and to learn how the everyday decisions we make in life affect our environment,” commented Oscar Gonzalez, CVWD Board President. “It is great to see people of all ages having a great time at our event, while gaining a better understanding of the issues affecting our region and being proactive to be part of the solution.”

This annual event is offered free to the community through the contributions of the event sponsors. The 2014 Earth Day & Open House top sponsors included: Southern California Edison, Digital First Media, The Daily Bulletin, Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water, the Toro Company, Citizens Business Bank Arena, Southern California Gas Company, Sears, ConServe Inc., Mark Christopher Chevrolet, and NaturEnergy. A special thanks to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Trainees for their volunteer work in helping make this event a success.
